Weekly Anime Review: Boku no Hero Academia 58

Warning: The following post contains spoilers from Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) episode 58. Read at your own risk.

Well, we can say that this episode was just one big ad for the Boku no Hero Academia movie that is out in theaters in Japan right now. Nonetheless, we still get to see our favourite characters. Next week won’t be a filler so we’ll get to see if our heroes can defeat Orca. Until then, let’s see what this episode has for us!

The actual episode starts by showing Midnight and Cementoss watching a TV programme about All Might in his younger days. It seems that he studied abroad in the U.S. and he fought crime there together with hos friend David Shield, who is now a Nobel winning scientist.

All Might and David Shield in their youth.

U.A. has a special training course for those who want to train in summer too, and this time Midoriya, Bakugou, Todoroki, Iida, Ochako and Tsuyu are participating (seems like they picked the fan-favourite characters for this). In this training they will have to fight a villain and save people, of course. All Might, Aizawa, Cementoss, Midnight and President Mic will supervise them.

They arrive at the “crime scene” and have to investigate what’s happening. A jewellery store got robbed and the villain is keeping the people inside as hostages. Uraraka flotas to look at the situation in the building, while Todoroki calls inside the store to distract the villain.

Uraraka telling the others about the people inside.

Bakugou loses his patience for this and just goes to charge straight at the villain. The others have no choice but to follow him. Bakugou blasts in but they all find something unexpected: the villain is lying on the floor, dead, with a stab wound in his chest!

Tsuyu checks the body and even though he moves she assumes he is supposed to be dead. The others discuss the problem and realise no one from outside could’ve killed the villain. It seems that instead of fighting villains they have a locked-room mystery in their hands! They release the hostages and interrogate them about what happened. They all give their testimonies and they match with each other.

The “hostages” (and suspects).

After some thinking, Midoriya realised that Midnight is the one that called the police, since she’s the only one arriving after the villain. Because the police came so early, he had to lock himself in the building. He also concluded that Midnight knew the villain before and she did this in order to try to stop him from committing crimes. In the end, the one that killed the villain was… himself. he committed suicide so protect Midnight, because if their relationship would be exposed her normal life could be affected.

With this, the exam ends. Aizawa praises Midoriya for his deduction, which was on point, but tells them all they get zero points because they overlooked something important: the villains corpse is gone.

The villain pretended to be dead in order to escape. It seems he didn’t return Midnight’s feelings. And that concludes the exam, out heroes got pranked hard.

After this, All Might returns to the school and checks his email. It’s a message from Melissa Shield, David Shield’s daughter. She is one of the main characters in the movie. She invited him on I-Island, where she and her dad live. With this invitation she wants to surprise her father, who will get to see his old friend.

Later that day, All Might asks Midoriya if he wants to join him in his trip, since it will be good for him as his successor. Midoriya accepts and they will both start a new journey together. If you want to know what happens in that, you will have to watch the movie!

Next week we will be back on track with the episodes, so stay tuned to that! Hopefully we won’t get too many fillers by the end of the season.
